There are mornings when New York tennis feels less like a directory of courts and more like a small, temporary society. On Saturday, August 15, Manhattan Tennis Association brought that society to Brian Watkins Tennis Center for a sunny, intimate session with Hydracourt: introductions, hydration, and then the pleasant business of trying to keep a ball in the court.
The group rotated through dingles, king of the court, and team singles, with Coach Ghila guiding the morning and MTA ambassadors Ine and Jameson, Ana, and Hydracourt players including Brian, Jup, and their guests moving through the games. The formats kept everyone in motion and made the usual public-court miracle possible: strangers becoming teammates before anyone had time to ask what everyone did for a living.
That is the particular pleasure of the city’s courts. They are public in the formal sense, but the culture is made person by person—by showing up early, sharing space, calling the lines, and knowing that the next ball may come from the court beside you. Hydracourt kept the group hydrated and brought together a community with the same slightly unreasonable devotion to tennis. MTA produced the morning; the courts supplied the character.
